Safety clothing as a strategic component of occupational safety

The heroes of the night – invisible to many

While most people are asleep, a team of nine specialists on average works through the night to ensure that thousands of road users can drive safely through these six tunnel sections the next morning – without ever knowing what was done the night before.

Did you know that there are around 850 passage lights along just 1.56 kilometres of tunnel in the Glarus region, and that we rewired, reconnected, tested and recommissioned every single one of them?

  • 10 nights
  • 9 men physically on duty
  • 1,560 metres of safety-related infrastructure

And protected with our MARS Energy clothing.

Safety clothing in plant construction and infrastructure: A practical report from IMS Projects AG

Safety clothing is a central component of occupational safety in the day-to-day work of IMS Projects AG. Employees work in a variety of environments, from road projects to electrical installations. In this interview, Milomir Vidakovic, project manager and member of the management board, explains the requirements that safety clothing must meet and why durability plays an economic role.

Question: How important is safety clothing in your everyday work?

Work clothing is an important part of our safety. Our employees work in a wide variety of areas, from the Federal Roads Office to substations and data centres to plant construction. It protects against heat, electric arcs and ensures that we are not overlooked. For this reason, it is very important to us. It gives us all greater safety. Clothes do much more in everyday life.

Question: What criteria were particularly important to you when selecting safety clothing?

It was important to us that the clothing was protective and visible. The standards are clear. It must also protect against flames and electrostatic discharges. If it is uncomfortable, people won't wear it. You have to be sure that the clothing has been properly tested and complies with the correct standards and guidelines. The most important thing is the people who wear it. They should be allowed to have a say and be involved in the decision-making process.

Question: What advice would you give to decision-makers who have to select safety clothing for everyday use?

You have to be sure that the clothing has been tested and complies with the standards. Involve the people who wear it. If it's uncomfortable, people won't wear it. Safety and acceptance go hand in hand.

Question: If you had to sum it up in one sentence, what does reliable safety clothing mean to you and your team?

For me, reliable safety clothing means that even at night, a large operation or part of a plant can be put into operation and our employees are wearing the right clothing and are protected.

Question: What are the advantages of durable safety clothing in terms of your budget?

High-quality clothing stays fresh longer and saves money. You can't cut corners when it comes to safety. An accident not only costs money, it also affects people. That's why it's better to invest more in the right direction instead of buying new every year.

Question: Why do you think the long-term benefits of workwear are more important than the purchase price alone?

You shouldn't skimp on safety. An accident not only costs money, but also affects people. That's why it's better to invest more in the right direction instead of buying new every year.
